Windproof folding pavilions

How to increase stability

When used outdoors, your folding pavilion will also be exposed to harsh weather conditions. The wind in particular is a real challenge - which you and your Pro-Tent folding tent can master with the right accessories and by applying a few rules. Thanks to the tent’s extraordinary stability, supplemented with fastening materials and weights, your tent will withstand almost any weather. Make your folding tent windproof!

How to make your folding pavilion weatherproof by tensioning it correctly

You can only ensure that your folding tent is weatherproof if you attach it correctly. To do this, simply use your guy set, which is supplied as standard with the folding pavilions from Pro-Tent. It contains 30 cm long pegs and guy ropes with carabiners.

The extra-rugged Pro-Tent 5000 folding tents are even equipped with a professional tensioning set as standard to provide even more safety. We also offer you this professional anchoring set as an accessory. This contains 50 cm long, T-shaped pegs, a hammer and tensioning straps with a quick-release function.

If the ground conditions are not suitable for the pegs, the tent can also be tied to stable and tension-resistant objects. If this is not an option either, our water weights are a good choice. They can be filled with 50 litres of water and replace the missing pegs.

It is important that you tension your folding tent in a physically sensible way. You can find precise instructions for the correct tensioning of your folding pavilion here: Securing the folding tent.

Stabilise your tent with weights

If there are no options for tensioning your Pro-Tent folding tent, or if you would like to secure it additionally, you can use our various weights. The idea is as simple as it is logical: If the tent weighs more in the right places, it will stand more securely. To make them as mobile as possible, our folding tents are actually characterised by the lowest possible weight. For additional stability, we offer a wide range of foot weights and pole weights.

Be it weight platesand weight or water weight – these 10-50 kg accessories will ensure maximum stability for your tent even in stronger winds. If the weight is not sufficient, simply stack several weight plates (up to 75 kg per stand) and combine them additionally with water weights. These take over the function of a ground anchor if T-pegs cannot be used for tensioning due to the ground conditions.

Pro-Tent folding pavilions are particularly weatherproof

Our tents are characterised by Swiss premium quality. They are designed to be particularly robust, windproof and weatherproof while providing optimum weight benefits. This is ensured by the high-quality aluminium frame, which is exceptionally stable. A telescopic gable compression spring mounted in the roof additionally absorbs the force generated by gusts of wind. It absorbs the sudden pressures and thus relieves the entire frame.

Every part in the frame is made of particularly resistant material. The joints, for example, are made of glass-fibre reinforced high-tech plastic. We always test all components using FEM analyses for possible load cases and thus prepare them ideally for difficult wind situations. They therefore easily fulfil all the characteristics required of a weatherproof folding pavilion.

Of course, our three series also differ in terms of stability.  As a folding tent classic, our Pro-Tent 2000 is designed above all for simple and easy handling. The Pro-Tent MODULE 4000 combines light weight with optimum stability, while the Pro-Tent 5000 has been designed for maximum stability, which naturally translates into a higher weight. So the ideal folding tent for you depends on how you intend to use it - we will be happy to advise you!

Wind force 8 and above is called a storm. In these conditions, people should no longer be outside for safety reasons. This also means that your folding tent should no longer be outside in such conditions.

To avoid getting into such a situation in the first place, it is important to find out about the current weather situation in advance and to refrain from building up the folding tent if there is a storm warning.

In most cases, events are cancelled or postponed by the organiser anyway for safety reasons in the event of storm warnings.

Should a violent storm or very strong winds take you by surprise despite all the precautions you have taken, your folding tent can usually be taken down just as quickly as it was put up. If it is already too late for this, it helps to remove all side walls in order to reduce the wind attack surface to a minimum.

If, despite all precautions, your folding tent should be damaged, we have all the necessary spare parts ready so you can repair it. It may also be worth checking with your insurance company whether storm damage is covered.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about windproof folding tents

It’s difficult to give a general answer to this question. The folding tent’s stability also depends on the model and the accessories. Basically, however, it can be said that our Pro-Tent folding tents with the right accessories are wind and weatherproof up to wind force 8 if they are properly secured. However, as too many factors play a role, we can unfortunately not give any guarantee in this respect.

Ideally, you should plan well ahead. So if you have an outdoor event coming up, you should take a close look at the wind forecasts and secure your tent accordingly. If a problematic level (8 or higher) is reached, you should act early and take down your tent - or not pitch it at all. If you are caught in the storm, remove the side walls, check all safety measures and find a safe place for yourself. After all, it’s your health that comes first.

Basically, you should inform yourself well about which material the tent is made of Since "windproof" is not a protected term, any manufacturer can call their folding tent windproof. Make sure that the tent is produced using high-quality materials and that wind safety is specifically proven. The wind force facts stated will give you a clue. A windproof folding tent should at least withstand wind force 6, but wind force 8 is better.

But remember: Winds forces higher than 8 constitute a storm and at this point at the latest people should no longer stay outdoors, i.e. not even under a folding tent. Even though our most robust folding tents can withstand such conditions if adequately secured, you should take the precaution of dismantling your folding tent. This is because flying objects can damage components such as the fabric roof.

In addition, the accessories available will give you a good insight into how important the topic of safety is to the respective manufacturer. Weights in the form of plates, water weights or sandbags as well as professional guy tensioning should be available.

Basically, there is no fixed wind strength that a folding tent must meet in order to be considered windproof. There is therefore no standard regulating the use of this term. Accordingly, you should look carefully at the wind force up to which the respective manufacturer recommends using the folding tent. A windproof folding pavilion should be stable at least up to wind force 6, but better one or two levels higher.

Winds forces higher than 8 constitute a storm and at this point at the latest people should no longer stay outdoors, i.e. not even under a folding tent. Even though our most robust folding tents can withstand such conditions if adequately secured, you should take the precaution of dismantling your folding tent. This is because flying objects can damage components such as the fabric roof.

The exact setup differs from model to model. Basically, the folding tent should first be erected according to the manufacturer's instructions. You can then attach weights to secure the tent further. In addition, it is important to properly tension the folding tent. The tensioning ropes should lead away from all four corners of the folding tent at an angle of approx. 45 degrees.

It is important that your folding tent is tensioned in a way that makes physical sense. This is the only way to guarantee additional wind safety. For this the four tensioning ropes should lead away from the folding tent at an angle of approx. 45 degrees. It is important that the tensioning ropes are not tensioned too tightly. You should only tighten them with moderate force so that they do not sag.

In strong winds, you should tension your folding tent directly at the frame and not using the tensioning loops at the corners of the roof and regularly check that the tent is safely secured. If this is not the case, you will have to readjust them or reset the pegs. The full instructions on how to secure your folding tent is available here

Weights in the form of weight plates, sandbags or water weights ensure the basic safety of the folding tent. In addition, the folding pavilion can and should be secured using a professional tensioning set.

When there are strong winds and storms, rain is often not far off. That’s why you should make sure that you buy a waterproof folding pavilion which is also windproof. According to the European standard EN 343:2003, waterproofing class 3 is ensured from a water column of 1,300 mm. The standards of the EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing) even classify functional material only from a water column of 4,000 mm. So you should make sure that the water column is at least higher than 3,000 mm. For comparison: All Pro-Tent folding tents have an outstanding water column of 10,000 mm. With Pro-Tent you get the ideal combination of waterproofing and storm protection.
